What: Ariat Taos Vest
Why: It can be hard to draw the line between interesting accents on clothes and stumbling into costume party territory. I had an unfortunate incident (many years ago when I was still developing my sense of fashion) where I paired a kimono dress with Japanese style shoes and an Asian inspired bag that I purchased in Chinatown. Go ahead and shudder, I know how bad it sounds. I’m just thankful someone stopped me before I applied full kabuki makeup. I’ve come a long way since then, though, and I know that the key to pulling off these looks is to focus on one piece and keep the rest of your outfit simple.
This fall, I’m all about the western vibe (not including cowboy hats) and the subtle details on this vest are great. The rich brown vest is embroidered with floral and paisley accents, lending an air of authenticity without people actually thinking you’re a tourist in town with a traveling rodeo. Under no circumstances, however, should this vest be paired with cowboy boots or anything that remotely resembles a bandanna.
