Fashion Week Diaries: Really Big Barbies And Celebs In Red
February 17, 2009
Fashion Week began on Friday with the Heart Truth Red Dress Collection Show. As I stood tall and proud in the standing line, I had plenty of time to take in the impressive, nostalgic Barbie display by the fountain, complete with pink plastic apples, adorable 80s outfitted dolls, and life-sized replicas. (FYI – Barbie's 50th anniversary is being honored this week, which is why she's the tent's main attraction.)
The invitation encouraged everyone to wear red, and to my surprise, the majority of the normally black-clad fashionistas obliged. Above is a shot of the crowd from my perch.
A variety of celebs walked the show wearing red dresses each created by a different designer, with the divas of the bunch stealing the spotlight, and most of the applause, from the newbies. It was the first time I've ever felt bad for Tori Spelling, who registered much lower on the applause-o-meter than icon Cicely Tyson. Vivica A. Fox in sequined Jenny Packham and Olympic Gold Medal winner Nastia Liukin in Max Azria were the among the crowd pleasers.
Trend-wise, many chic Heart Truthers opted for red purses as a way to show their support. Some were spotted with large, patent versions like this Ghibli Patent Bag ($395) while others went the more demure route with a festive clutch. We suggest this Bjuliet Satin Clutch ($30) to add a touch of daring red to your LBD.
And check out our post on what to wear with red, if you ever to decide to dress up in the fiery color for a night on the town. Or for next year's Red Dress Show if you happen to score an invite.
