From a Reader: I’ve been wanting to buy a Diane von Furstenberg Dress on eBay for some time now since I know the prices are much lower than in department stores like Bloomingdales or Nordstrom. My only concern is that they might not be real. Any suggestions?
Answer: Knock-offs are a dime a dozen and eBay is a breeding ground for designer rip offs. Just read one blogger’s unfortunate story about being scammed. Our recommendation? Go for the real thing or buy a discounted original from a reputable retailer. Not only is it safer, but you’re also putting your money into the hands of the designer rather than into those of the black market. When buying on eBay:
1. Watch out for prices that look to good to be true. No authentic Louis Vuitton handbag can really cost less than $500.
2. Get to know the seller. Check the user’s feedback from previously sold items, talk to people who have bought from the person, and when looking at big ticket items, get in touch with the seller via phone or email.
3. Request extra photos. The more you dig, the more certain you can be that the product is of genuine quality.
4. Beware of seedy payment methods. If the seller only offers payment via money orders or wire transfers, chances are you’re looking for trouble.
