Good Question: What's Resort Casual?!?
May 10, 2007
From a Reader: Help! I have a weekend event with my husband and the dress is resort wear casual. What in the world does that mean? The group functions mainly consist of dinners and cocktail hours. Anyone have ideas for appropriate outfits other than Tommy Bahama?
Answer: Here are the basics: no jeans, stains, wrinkles, cleavage, flip flops, T-shirts or bums and tummies hanging out. Basically, imagine you are going to meet your in-laws for the first time at a private country club. Dress with modesty and class, bearing little skin and choosing clothing of fine quality and classic lines. In short, dress up rather than down despite the word “casual” in the title.
Start with casual heels or dressy sandals, like these Tommy Hilfiger Kathy Eyelet Fabric Espadrilles. On top, wear a nice shirt, veering away from camisoles unless you’re wearing them under a jacket. For the bottom, quality pants or a skirt (should be knee-length or longer) is best. Leave shorts for daytime. To make things really simple, opt for a cocktail dress. If it’s skimpy, pair it with a shawl or cardigan for extra coverage. I like this Laundry by Shelli Segal ‘Retro Dots’ Matte Jersey Dress that can be dressed up or down with accessories like these Julie Sandlau 18-carat gold leaf earrings.
