Green Design's Hottest Names

We're beyond the point when eco means frumpy, so, ladies, take note. The following labels are making great-looking clothing that will not only make you look fabulous–it'll make you feel fabulous, too, since you know you're helping to save our blighted Earth one tunic at a time. Here are my three favorite up and comers in the world of green.

(1) Lara Miller One of green design’s best-known names, Lara Miller designs architectural but figure-friendly clothing meant to be twisted, wrapped, and flipped upside down to reveal a whole new garment. How you wear her wares is up to you: tunics turn into shawls, tube tops into mini skirts, and dresses into shirts! Her creativity is overwhelming, and, of course, her organic fabrics very laudable—but sustainability is only part of why we love Lara Miller.

Lara's wares aren't sold on her website (though you should check it out to sneak a peek at the Spring/Summer 2008 collection), but New York's Bio and Kaight boutiques, as well as Washington state's Olivine shop, offer a good selection of the designer's shirts, skirts, dresses, and sweaters (starting at $195).

(2) Del Forte Denim Born in the USA of 100-percent organic cotton parents, Del Forte’s stylish, luxurious denim is one of the green brands working hard to change how women think of eco-fashion. No hippidy-dippidy here: this stuff is straight gorgeous, distinctive, affordable—and ethical.

Get Del Forte jeans and skirts at Kaight boutique ($150-$199) or Tobi online ($176-$194).

(3) Vegan Queen I’m a vegetarian, but I’ve always thought veganism (no animal products of any kind) an absurd philosophy—in fact, as a young equestrian, leather was a key ingredient in my happiness. But these days it’s not key to fashion. If you’ve come to realize that skinning cows is, well, a little mean—or even if you couldn’t care less—Vegan Queen is the brand for you. Their beautiful bags caught my eye at a recent Green Fashion show, and their grinning designer declared, “It’s all rubber—can you believe it?” I can’t, and neither will you.
