I’m a huge fan of white sneakers and seriously anyone can pull them off. Unfortunately, the white color becomes dirty over time, which is only natural if you wear them a lot. While I’m a fan of slightly worn-in white sneakers, most people aren’t and want to keep their white kicks looking, well, white. Here’s how to clean your favorite white canvas sneakers.
Cleaning White Canvas: Since canvas is basically cotton, treat it as you would a stain on your clothing. First, wet the shoe with water and follow-up with a gentle cleaner/stain remover (Woolite, for instance) and a toothbrush. Lightly scrub at the stains and rinse with water. Don’t ever put your shoes in the dryer to dry! The heat will not do your favorite sneakers any good. Be patient and let them air-dry.
There are a few different ways to clean the rubber parts of your sneakers. Of course, you can use the method above, but these work just as well!
1. Magic Eraser. This wonderful cleaning tool will literally take off all the dirt. There’s also virtually no clean up! Just wet a corner of the Magic Eraser and rub on the rubber part of your sneaker. The dirt will lift right up.
2. Toothpaste. Apply a little non-gel toothpaste and wipe away with a clean cloth. You can use a toothbrush if the dirt stains are stubborn.
3. Windex. Use the non-blue formula for Windex so you don’t stain your shoes. Simply wet a cloth and scrub along the rubber sole.
4. Nail polish remover. Dip a cotton ball or swab into nail polish remover and wipe away the dirt in an instant.
Once your white sneakers are clean, take precautions and use Scotchgard to protect the fabric for future wear!
