Lace trim shorts are becoming a thing. No really, they’re everywhere. Labels like Free People, ASOS and PJK are all making them. But even with all those brands on board, we still find ourselves wondering “Are these really cool?” Obviously, denim cutoffs are classic, but when you add a lace hem it can get it a little, umm, country.

After scouring the interwebs, however, we decided there’s one simple rule for deciphering the cute denim and lace shorts from the not-so-cute. The key is the simpler the better. A white lace hem is fine–neon lace on wildly colored denim is probably not. Same goes for over-the-top lace on denim in crazy washes or with tons of rips. Break this rule and you could risk crossing over into hillbilly territory and nobody wants that.

Still on the fence about the whole denim and lace shorts trend? Take a peek at a few of the styles up for grabs this season then tell us in the comments if you’d wear a pair.
