The Best Swimsuits For Every Body Type, Straight From A Swimwear Designer Herself
June 25, 2013
If you’re anything like us, shopping for swimsuits is kind of an obsession. Not that we’re built like supermodels, but with so many cute options it’s hard to stop. But before you buy another bikini we thought we’d help you out with some expert shopping tips from a swimwear pro.
Designer Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss is probably best known for her amazing dresses, but you shouldn’t sleep on her swimwear. Designed by a real woman for real women, Shoshanna’s swim designs are sexy, yet thoughtful. She’s always thinking about what’s missing in swimwear and how she can make women of all shapes and size look their best.
Because we love her designs so much, we recently caught up with Shoshanna and got her to dish on choosing the best swimsuit for your body type, what bathing suits every woman needs and how to take care of them. Get the scoop below.
SF: What’s the one thing every woman should remember when she’s shopping for swimwear?
SLG: Fit is absolutely the most important thing to consider when shopping for swimwear. Always try the suit on before purchasing it because sizes will vary, even from the same brand.
SF: Thinking about body type, are there any rules?
SLG: Try on different styles and shapes to find one that flatters your figure and remember that not all trends work for everyone. Women who are top heavy should look for a suit with extra support such as a halter. The thick straps help distribute the weight so it’s both more comfortable to wear and more flattering as well.
Ruffles are great for creating the illusion of curves, so women who have boyish figures or a flat chest should opt for a suit with ruffle detailing.
Bottoms with side-tie strings are great for pear shaped figures. The ties allow you to adjust the bottoms to ensure proper fit and create a flattering silhouette.
SF: What are your swimsuit essentials? What are the styles every woman should have?
SLG: Every woman should own a chocolate brown or navy bathing suit, especially for the first outing of the season. The color isn’t as harsh as black, but it’s still flattering and looks good against the lightest skin tones and the darkest.
One-piece swimsuits are also classic and never go out of style. With so many fashionable options to choose from this season, there is something for every age and body type.
SF: What’s the best way to care for your swimwear so that it lasts longer?
SLG: I always step right into the shower in my suit at the end of each day and give it a good rinse, then hang dry. Once vacation or summer season is over, I give the suits a good soak in Woolite or a delicate lingerie wash and give them two good rinses in cold water before putting them away.
7. What’s your fave Shoshanna swim piece for this summer?
SLG: We did a new twist bandeau top this year and it’s selling out everywhere. It’s the best bathing suit top we’ve ever made.
We also did great beach cover-ups, and our dresses are so easy to wear. I just throw one on with my gold chain necklace and I’m ready to go.
