How To Dress Like A Street Style Star

1. Don't be afraid of color.

Most people only wear one item of color per outfit - either the top or the bottom, or at the very least an accessory. To think and dress like a street style star you must embrace color--this means wearing it head to toe! Just remember the rule: the brighter, the better.

2. Mix prints.

Polka dots with stripes! Florals with different florals! Anything goes when it comes to mixing prints if you're a street style star. If you're not--try this styling trick and you won't be disappointed. Sure, the results are a bit loud--but that's the idea.  Turn heads at your office or on date night by wearing a top and bottom in different prints.

3. Always wear heels.

Rain or shine, day or night, heels are a must. They elongate the leg, make you look thinner, and give your outfit a polished, dressy finish. Whether you're wearing distressed jeans or an LBD, heels are always the appropriate footwear. Just ask Victoria Beckham and every street style star under the sun.

4. Even your sneakers should have heels.

The heels rule applies to your sneakers, too. Sorry! Brands like Ash, Steve Madden and Kohl's make wedge sneakers that are way more affordable than the $900 Isabel Marant pair that started the started. My Style Pill (above) loves her Ash pair.

5. Splurge on a good handbag.

A designer handbag is an essential for street style bloggers - and should be an essential for us regular people, too. They're not just good arm candy; designer bags last longer, and since you carry a purse everyday, why wouldn't you want the leather, seams and fixtures to be as high quality as possible? Plus, they're just pretty!

6. But don't splurge on everything.

You don't have to wear head-to-toe designer to get "the look" of a street style star--in fact, most of these women are savvy shoppers themselves and know what to splurge on (handbags, for one) and what to save on (everything else). Courtney Kerr (above) wears $39 ShoeMint pumps with old Zara jeans and looks damn good.

7. Be matchy match.

Don't be afraid to match your handbag to your coat to your shoes. Monochromatic outfits are huge right now among the celebrity set, and have always been a favorite of street style stars.

8. Mix high/low.

Mixing high /low is one of the cardinal rules of styling--for everyone from Michelle Obama to street style stars. Cupcakes and Cashmere star Emily Schuman pairs a J.Crew jacket and Zara top with a Chanel bag (we told you to splurge on a good handbag!!).

9. Wear statement sunglasses

Everybody loves their basic black or tortoiseshell go-to sunglasses, but to really kick your style up a notch, you need to go bold with your eyewear. The 'Funny Sunnies' trend is no joke - oversized, cat-eye shades are king for spring. Try a pair like Peace Love Shea's (above), which are Prabal Gurung x Linda Farrow, or shop Forever21 and ASOS for cheaper look-alikes.

10.  Dress for next season.

Fashion is about the future, not the past. As Anna Wintour said in The September Issue, "It's all about looking forward, not back." Designers show their collections about 6 months before the season starts, so if you following Fashion Week and check sites like style.com for runway images, you'll always be ahead of the trends. Dress for next season or even next year. And try to avoid trends that are on their way out (if they've been big for 2-3 seasons, they're about to expire like Cinderella at midnight or day old milk!).

11. Don't be afraid to turn heads.

Dressing like a street style star means wanting attention for what you're wearing, not fearing it. Let go of any shyness you may have developed over the years--you don't want to blend in with the crowd, you want to do the opposite. Wear bright colors, crazy hats, mix prints, neons to work--these are the styling risks worth taking.

12. Wear a hat.

Most people don't think they are "hat people." That is one of the biggest fashion myths - there are no such thing as hat people and not hat people. It's all about finding the right topper for you. Luckily, right now, anything goes with hats! Fedoras, slouchy beanies, floppy wool hats a la Brigitte Bardot. Photographer Lee Oliveira snapped countless hat-driven looks at Paris Fashion Week (above). And what the Parisian fashion editors wears, goes.
