How To Get Beach Waves, No Heat Required

My very first hair crush wasn’t Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera–rather, it was the Olsen twins. Both Mary Kate and Ashley knew how to rock a scrunchie as Michelle in Full House, bangs in the You’re Invited To… series, and finally, perfectly rumpled beach waves a la When in Rome.

While beach waves are easy to recreate with a curling iron, putting unnecessary heat on your hair–especially every single day–can be damaging. Hair already gets dry and frizzy from the sun and saltwater in the summer, so what’s the point in adding even stress?

To save your hair–and you some time!–I spoke with celebrity hairstylists Peter Lamas and Mitch Stone to get their best tips for achieving that beachy look without the heat. Check out their step-by-step tutorials below.

Technique #1: Peter Lamas, who’s worked on beauty legends including Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Jacqueline Kennedy and Diana Ross–suggests getting started the night before on clean, dry hair. First, apply a generous amount of mousse throughout your hair–he recommends Volumize Me. Next, divide hair into two sections (a left and a right) and twist tightly outward away from your face. Roll the hair into a small bun (a la Miley Cyrus) and secure with a hair tie. After you wake up, undo the ties and use your fingers to comb through, misting a light holding spray to keep your locks in place.

Technique #2: Mitch Stone, the man behind Cindy Crawford and Tyra Banks’ gorgeous manes, emphasizes the need to use great products when creating gorgeous waves without the use of heat. He recommends spritzing a great texturizing spray on the ends of your hair as a preparatory step.

Next, braid your hair–yes, braid!–then mist it with a setting spray. After thirty minutes, undo your braids and voila! Beachy waves, the heat-free way.

Technique #3: If your hair is naturally wavy (like mine!), use a texture spray to enhance and define your natural texture. To prevent hair from drying out, don’t use a salt spray; rather, spring for the new Keratin Complex Sugar Spray to keep your locks frizz-free and perfectly tousled.
