Smoking is a nasty habit, so if you do it you definitely don’t want everyone around you to know. Wearing the smell on your clothes is the biggest giveaway. If you can’t quit (or in the mean time before you do!), here’s how to remove the smell of cigarettes from your clothing. One of my co-workers swears by this trick!
For clothes that can be machine-washed:
Step 1: Sort your laundry by color (as usual) and put it in the washing machine.
Step 2: Set the water temp to as high as possible (hot for lights, warm for darks, cold for blues and reds).
Step 3: Pour in a 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar and a few drops of tea tree oil (available at most drug stores) in addition to your regular detergent.
Step 4: Run the wash and dry as usual. Your clothes will smell a bit like tea tree oil–so if you don’t like the smell in the bottle, this trick is not be for you!
For clothes that are hand-wash only:
Step 1: Fill your bath tub or sink with extra hot water.
Step 2: Pour in 1 cup of distilled white vinegar.
Step 3: Hang clothes above the steaming water and shut the door so the steam can penetrate the fibers.
For clothes that are dry-clean only:
Step 1: Fill a spray bottle with warm water and a few drops of tea tree oil.
Step 2: Spray the clothing item from an arm’s length distance with the mixture.
Voila! You should be smoke free.
