How To Make D’Orsay Flats More Comfortable

September 17, 2014 by Justine Schwartz

I’ve invested in two pairs of D’Orsay flats over the last 2 seasons, a from Chinese Laundry (they’re $59–not bad). I’m just thankful that I didn’t splurge on the $500 Jenni Kayne ones, because the ones I have are SO uncomfortable and whenever I try to wear them to work I end up hobbling home at the end of the day with blisters and sore feet. It’s not cute.

On a mission to wear them, I set out to find a way to either break them in or protect my feet from blisters to make them more comfortable. Behold the tips I’ve found that actually work:

To protect the heel from blisters: I have two favorite anti-blister products that I swear by for all uncomfortable or new shoes, including D’orsays. The first is Foot Glide Blister Resister ($7.99) which comes in a roll-up stick format (like a deodorant stick) and it’s completely non wet and non greasy so you just roll it on to the heel or wherever the blisters are likely to occur. Genius!

To stretch out the toe so it doesn’t pinch your feet: D’orsay flats are by definition just a heel part and a toe part, so in an effort to make them stay on the foot I am convinced that brands make the toe part 1 size too small. Also, they feature a pointy toe, which is notoriously uncomfortable. All of these factors make them suck for toes and nil on comfort.

To stretch out the toe, or stretch out any shoes that need it, we swear by the ice trick. Here’s how to do it: Fill a plastic bag with water, put it in your shoe, then put your shoe in the freezer. As the water freezes, it expands which will in turn stretch your shoe.

To make the flat sole more comfortable: This might sound silly, but D’orsay flats can be a little too flat. What I mean is, they have no arch. They are for flat-footed people. Make them even a little bit more comfortable by adding a Dr. Scholl’s insert.
