How To Spend A Weekend In Monterey, California

Many of you might know Monterey, California from the hit series Big Little Lies (who can’t wait for season 2?!), but this city has actually been a top travel destination for a while. Once a booming sardine-packing town, depicted in John Steinback’s novel Cannery Row, this central California city allows you to experience history and seaside adventures all in one place. It also happens to be the perfect place for a memorable weekend getaway with friends or family. Here’s how to spend a few days going back in time and exploring Monterey’s converted factories that are now shops, restaurants and bars all while enjoying the luxuries of being on the coast.

Where To Stay:

The InterContinental Clement Monterey is right on the water in the heart of Cannery Row. It also happens to be within walking distance of lots of activities you’ll want to check off your list.

If you’re a book-lover, you’ll definitely want to take advantage of the hotel’s Novel Nights package in partnership with Audible that allows you to access books about your destination. You can listen to different audiobooks when you’re lounging in your room to better understand what it was like to live in Monterey at different points in history. Then, when you’re ready to explore you’ll be able to see just how much the city has evolved.

Where To Eat:

One of the many perks of being right on the water is that there is no shortage of amazing seafood. Eating exquisite cuisine while soaking up the breathtaking views? It doesn’t get much better than that, right?! Here are three restaurants you shouldn’t miss:

C Resturant: You don’t have to travel far for this one; this restaurant is located inside the InterContinental Clement Monterey. The menu is made up of delicious seafood options, all endorsed by Seafood Watch of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. If you go there for breakfast, I highly recommend trying the honey toast. Bonus: every table has a beautiful view!

Bistro Moulin: Even though you are thousands of miles away from Europe, you’ll swear you are in Paris while you enjoy a glass of wine and French cuisine at this gem.

What To Do:

Monterey Bay Aquarium: People travel all around the world to see this famous landmark where you can see everything from sea otters to jellyfish. After you’re done having a look at more than 35,000 sea creatures, grab lunch at their beautiful restaurant.

Explore the history: This city is filled with well-preserved historical sites that you can find on Cannery Row and Fisherman’s Wharf all near the hotel.

17-mile drive: Take a cruise down this scenic road where lots of celebrities have houses. Don’t forget to take a stop to check out the tide pools, too.

San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco may get all the glory when it comes to visiting California, but if you’re looking for a destination that’s a bit more of the beaten path–but just as beautiful–make Monterey your next must-see destination.
