We love our maxi skirts and dresses, but have a hard time finding ways to wear them when it gets chilly. While the floor-length silhouette typically elongates our frame, paired with a winter coat, it often looks bulky and almost dowdy. This season, after much research (read: street style stalking), we’ve finally figured out how to wear a winter maxi. Ready?

1. Select one in a thick cotton, wool, or otherwise heavier fabric–check out our slideshow for our fave picks.

2. Pair with textured tights–heck, you could even wear it with leggings, no one will see you legs.

3. For footwear, choose high heeled or wedge booties--they’ll make your legs seem miles long and, unlike taller boots, won’t cause your skirt to bulk up at the bottom.

4. On top, wear either a jacket that’s either fitted or belted. As long as you accentuate your waist, your maxi will look modern and trendy, rather than frumpy.

Voila–you’re ready for whatever weather, ladies.

Other trends we’re loving this winter? Puffer vests, neon jewelry, and metallic moto jackets!
