Whether you’re into Roaring Twenties style or retro Disco Fever fashion, vintage shopping is always a long, in-depth process, and even more of a battle when shopping online. Here are a few tips that any online vintage scout needs to know.
1. Size Matters: What was a size 4 in 1953 is by no means what we know as a size 4 in today’s fashion industry. Any reputable vintage seller includes the measurements of a garment, so keep a cheat sheet of your own stats on hand when shopping to make the process easier. If they don’t offer measurements up front, be sure to email the seller before buying.
2. True Colors: Everyone’s computer screen displays colors differently and photos don’t always accurately portray the brilliance or richness of a fabric’s color. When in doubt, ask for confirmation from the seller about the garment’s real shade (with color swatches or other images to help verify an item’s hue).
3. Dig Deep: Get as much information as you can about the garment you want to buy. Most of the good spots for vintage include comprehensive details on a piece’s wear and tear, so you can be sure you’re buying a piece that’s in good condition. When in doubt, email or call the seller to get more information. You can never be too nosy when it comes to vintage.
4. Don’t Give Up: There are so many great places to hit for vintage shopping. We recommend starting with some of our favorite places for buying vintage online, which offer good return policies, lots of helpful images and a wide selection of vintage from all periods. Relax and enjoy the experience. It may take time to find the perfect piece, but the search is half the fun.
