I have always been a little apprehensive about natural deodorant. Yes, I know that it is supposed to be better for you and that the chemicals in regular deodorants are constantly being questioned as the potential cause of a variety of major and minor health issues and diseases, but let me tell you…I am a sweater (not the shirt, I mean someone who sweats A LOT…duh), and sweaters have to take their deodorant very seriously. Because if we don’t, nobody will want to be around us…trust me.
My sweating problem began way back in middle school when I was very active in sports and ballet. All of the other girls my age would barely break a sweat after a tough game or dance class, but not me. I was always the one that was drenched from head to toe. It was embarrassing then, but not it doesn’t bother me as much, because I learned how to manage it…with men’s deodorant. Yep, my sweat problem is so bad that I use men’s deodorant every day, not just when im working out or playing sports like some girls. But, I know that I am not the only one, because I have definitely seen girls sneakily buying men’s deodorant in my local grocery story before.
Anyways, I am a sweater and the thought of using women’s deodorant makes me cringe, so you can’t imagine what was going through my head when our Editorial Director encouraged me to experiment with natural deodorants and write this post. Not to mention, I would have to do it in August, the hottest month in NYC. (Cue panic attack.) After warning my roommate and everyone in the office that I would smell and be “the sweaty girl” for a week, I set out on my journey, but the results were not as scary as I expected. Actually, I kind of liked it.
For one week, I used 5 different varieties of Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant, and here’s what happened:
Day 1: On day 1, I was extremely apprehensive, so I took the easy route and applied Schmidt’s Fragrance-Free ($10). According to the jar (Yes, it comes in a jar and you apply it with your finger tips or the fancy little metal applicator that it comes with), you’re supposed to use a pea-sized amount. So, I rubbed a pea-sized amount on each of my armpits in the morning after my shower and headed to work. Clearly, this stuff was not made for sweaters like me, because by the time I finished my forty-minute commute, my pits were soaked. At first, I said “I’m never doing this again,” but I persevered.
Day 2: The next day, I applied WAY more than a pea-sized amount. I slathered that stuff on and bravely wore a tank top to the office. Everything was fine! No sweat. No BO. Nothing. It was great! But, I did re-apply Schmidt’s Fragrance-Free before I headed out for my evening run. You know, just in case.
Day 3, 4 and 5: Since day 2 went soooo well, I decided to get more adventurous. On day 3, I used Scmidt’s Bergamont + Lime scented variety, and this one became my favorite. The limey scent reminded me of summer, and it smelled super fresh. On day 4, I used Ylang-Ylang + Calendula scent and on day 5, I used Lavendar + Sage, the scents weren’t for me, but the deodorant itself definitely worked. By day 5, I was so comfortable with my new nautral lifestyle that I didn’t even bother re-applying it before my nightly run. Now, I’m not too sure if I smelled by the end of the run or not, but let’s just say that the other runners on the path weren’t running away from me or making faces at me, so it must’ve been ok.
Day 6 and Day 7: These final two days were a true test. On the morning of day 6, I applied Cedarwood + Juniper, but instead of heading to the office, I went to the most difficult, intense workout class that I have endured in years, and I was SWEATING, just like I did back in middle school. I was so sweaty that I looked like I just got out of the shower, but I have good news. I didn’t smell. Schmidt’s for the win! On Day 7, I applied the lime-scented deo again (since I liked it so much the first time), and headed to Broadway Dance Center for a class. Once again, Schmidt’s was a success!
Now that my journey is over, I’m definitely not afraid of natural deodorant, and it may even be a change that I am willing to commit to. And, since I wasn’t covering my pits in chemicals, it made me feel a little bit healthier and a little bit better about myself. I understand that it isn’t for everyone, but I would definitely recommend Schmidt’s to my friends and family, which is a big deal considering I have to hang out with them B.O. or not. And I am recommending it to you. It is also great for pregnant mommies to be! So don’t be scared to jump on the natural, aluminum free, paraben free, and phthalate free trend. After all, “it is better for you!”
