I Won't Be Leaving For My February Beach Vacay Without These 6 Things In My Bag

1. A pair of espadrilles for the plane. One of the trickiest parts of going from really cold weather to really hot weather is figuring out what to wear on the plane. You want to be warm enough when you leave the house, but not have to shed too many layers when you get to your destination. Instead of wearing boots and then having to change in to flip flops at the airport, I always go for light footwear that works both places. I prefer espadrilles, but sneakers or ballet flats are good, too. In my bag: Soludos Striped Smoking Slippers ($55)

2. A new bikini. I am a bit of a swimwear hoarder, but I firmly believe that you can treat yourself to a new bikini every time you go on a beach vacation (no, I don't mean every time you go to the beach--that would be excessive.) For me, this is only once or twice a year if I'm lucky, so I'll spend around $100 on a great new suit. If you go more frequently than that or are on a budget--check out the suits at Target and Old Navy. I have gotten great tops and bottoms at both places for under $20 (my record was $4 for a suit I wear all the time!). This year, I ordered one of these scalloped Marysia suits--obsessed! In my bag: Marysia Swim Antibes Scallop Bikini Top ($128)

3. A colorful cover-up. As much as I love a new bikini, I'm actually more in to cover-ups because I just feel more comfortable in them at the beach. Some people like cover-ups that they can go straight from the beach to lunch or dinner in, but my criteria is just that they have to be fabulous. Imagine me, sitting in my printed Mara Hoffman cover, sipping a strawberry daiquiri with an oversize straw hat. Hashtag Palm Beach chic. In my bag: Mara Hoffman Draped Dress ($256)

4. Rubber flip-flops. Some people like their fancy leather sandals on vacation, but I think cheap rubber flip-flops are the way to go. You won't mind getting sand and sea salt and chlorine deep in to the crevasses of these puppies, or about ruining them for future wear. I rotate between gold Havaianas, Tory Burch logo ones and $2 black Target flip-flops. Decisions, decisions. In my bag: Bestseller Havaianas Women's Slim ($26)

5. A cloth beach tote. Here's my criteria for a beach bag: it has to be a bold print (my two favorites are tie dye and this tribal vibe one) and it has to be cloth/foldable to fit in my suitcase. I cannot deal with straw or canvas ones that take up a lot of space in my luggage. Bonus points if you can throw it in the washing machine after your trip--because that thing collects a lot of sand. In my bag: Rip Curl 'Modern Myth' Beach Bag ($49.50)

6. A straw hat. Ever since my little Proactiv sun spots fiasco, I do not hit the beach without SPF 50 on my face and a hat with a HUGE brim. Like huge. You might think it's a little grannyish--but just you wait until you experience a little premature aging. Then you'll be running to the hat store. In my bag: BCBGMAXAZRIA Butterfly Floppy Hat ($88)

Also fabulous (maybe next trip?): Mara Hoffman Printed underwired bikini ($235)

Also fabulous (maybe next trip?): Coolchange Positano Tunic ($198)

Also fabulous (maybe next trip?): Cesca Stripe Tote ($28)

Also fabulous (maybe next trip?): K. Jacques Bikini Wrap Gladiator Sandals ($268)

Also fabulous (maybe next trip?): FLIGHT 001 'Go Clean' Beach Set ($60)

Also fabulous (maybe next trip?): Mikoh Kahala crossover string bikini top ($110)
