Have you ever wondered if your living space correlates to your mood? I think it goes without saying that our bedrooms are all about self-expression. Maybe we have concert posters hanging on the walls or family photos framed by our beds. Well, according to Feng Shui, not only does our living space represent who we are, it also represents whether or not we’re bringing positive or negative energy into our lives. And this isn’t simply about what is and isn’t in our home, it’s about where everything is placed.
Want to try feng shui? Well since that’s a bit of an undertaking, we broke it down to the three biggest things you should know about the Chinese philosophy.
1) What is feng shui?
Feng shui literally translates in English to “wind-water.” Feng shui is a Chinese philosophical system that focuses on how the placement of things affects the energy/ambiance in your living space. To have good feng shui means that the placement of things allows for the full potential of harmony, happiness and success for the people in that environment. The idea is that feng shui is unavoidable. It will affect every moment of every day, which is why you would want to achieve the best feng shui as much as you can in your control.
2) Make sure to keep up with simple housekeeping tips.
Whether it’s the floors, steps, cabinet doors, etc, if any part of your house is squeaky– fix it! Keep your bathroom door closed, and always clean your windows. Place plants on top of kitchen countertops. Position your bed against something sturdy like a wall, and make sure the bed is completely against wherever it’s pushed to. You want your bed to be at a spot where you can see everything in your bedroom. And interestingly enough, you should cover your TV at the end of every day.
3) Do a space clearing.
This is the idea that you’re removing the imprints placed on people from times pasts who have lived in the space you inhibit now to make room for your own energy to fill the room. Some methods include: burning palo santo, and spraying natural orange essential oil with water. While doing this process, make sure your mentality is one that’s positive. Think of your wildest dreams and remember that feng shui should be peaceful, so don’t take it too seriously.
