Is It Safe To Sit With A Laptop In Your Lap?
January 22, 2016
Chances are if you own a laptop, you’ve probably sat with it in your lap numerous times. I mean, it is a lap-top. Sitting with a laptop in your lap isn’t exactly the safest thing to do.
There have been a few cases of hot laptops causing “toasted skin syndrome,” which is a “brownish discoloration of the skin caused by prolonged exposure to heat from the computer,” according to WebMD. Researchers have discovered that heat between 109.4 to116.6 degrees Fahrenheit is enough to cause burns. At 111.2 degrees Fahrenheit, you can experience toasted skin syndrome.
Another harmful effect of sitting with a laptop on your lap is skin cancer. Although it is very rare, there is still potential for a hot laptop causing skin damage, which can lead to skin cancer.
To minimize the risk of these issues, try placing your laptop’s sleeve between your legs and the computer. You can also invest in buying a lap desk or bed tray that will lift the computer completely off your body.
