Throw away your cigarette jeans and Kenzo fitteds folks. Dressing like a street style starlet is out, and Midwestern tourist realness is all the rage. Late last month, New York magazine published this piece on normcore, a new fashion trend percolating among the hipster set whose style choices skew more Wal-Mart and less Sartorialist. It’s an anti-fashion movement that has, because of the hip underground that’s laid claim to it, become stylish. And it’s had basically everyone in fashion buzzing for the past two weeks.

Yes, the clothes are seemingly not stylish, but we’re actually kind of into the normcore look. The peacocking that comes with street style culture can admittedly be a little over the top at times. It’s nice to be reassured that there are people who don’t mind looking like regular folk in what they choose to wear. And the normcore kids are in good company. Just yesterday, President Barack Obama, dad jean (a normcore staple) champion, made a surprise stop on Manhattan’s Upper East Side at a Gap store–a bonafide Mecca for normcore dressing.

It’s time to get with it, guys! Find out how to nail the normcore look with these 10 key pieces.
