Jennifer Lawrence's Essay On The Gender Pay Gap In Hollywood Is A Must-Read
October 16, 2015
Jennifer Lawrence is an accomplished woman at such a young age. Not only has she starred in the huge movie franchise The Hunger Games, she also won an Academy Award at just 22-years-old. You would think that with all the time, dedication and talent that she devotes to the industry, her hard work would be compensated for, right? Well, not exactly.
J.Law revealed in an essay she published for Lena Dunham‘s Lenny Letter e-newsletter that she, in fact, does not make as much as her male co-stars, which was revealed during last year’s Sony hack. Leaked emails contained evidence that Jennifer’s American Hustle male co-stars, Jeremy Renner, Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper, were paid more than any female actress involved with the film. When Lawrence found out about the gender pay gap, she admits that she wasn’t mad at the industry.
“I got mad at myself,” Lawrence says. “I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early.”
She goes on to write about how she didn’t want to be abrasive or too demanding when confronting this conflict, which she shares is a fear of hers that is most likely due to gender conditioning.
This concept really hit Lawrence when she shared, “I didn’t want to seem ‘difficult’ or ‘spoiled.’ At the time, that seemed like a fine idea, until I saw the payroll on the Internet and realized every man I was working with definitely didn’t worry about being ‘difficult’ or ‘spoiled.’… I’m over trying to find the ‘adorable’ way to state my opinion and still be likable!”
Now this is eye-opening. We’re so glad Lawrence is putting such an important topic on the map, and she has a ton of celebrity support from both male and female actors.
O Jennifer Lawrence I love you so. X
