Lena Dunham Quits Twitter Because Of Internet Trolls
September 30, 2015
Lena Dunham has officially quit Twitter. The reason? Online bullying. The Girls creator spoke to Kara Swisher on her podcast Re/code Decode about her decision to let someone else post for her on the social media platform.
“I don’t look at Twitter anymore. I tweet, but I do it through someone else…It truly wasn’t a safe space for me,” she said. “I think even if you think you can separate yourself from the kind of verbal violence that’s being directed at you, that it creates some really kind of cancerous stuff inside you. Even if you think, ‘Oh I can read like 10 mentions that say I should be stoned to death.’ That’s verbal abuse.”
Dunham was growing sick of all the mean comments. She specifically mentioned one Instagram picture she posted of herself wearing a pair of her boyfriend’s (Jack Antonoff) boxers. “It wasn’t a graphic picture,” she said. “I was wearing men’s boxers, and it turned into the most rabid, disgusting debate about women’s bodies,” she said.
It’s so sad that people have to be extremely negative all the time. The point of social media is to be social and share things, not to bully people.
