It's still that tricky hair style that no one can quite perfect without a team of stylists and three hours to spare – beachy waves. It never really went away, but its popularity is sure to be escalated after hoards of fans see Carrie and Miranda sporting the look in the new SATC movie out Friday. And, not to mention, on both actresses at last night's New York premiere.
A kaboodle of products out there claim to do the trick as well as a number of funky curl/wave devices. After much deliberation of whether or not to share my secret of perfect just-got-out-of-the-ocean and laid-on-the-beach-all-day waves and perfect curly waves, I've decided to share.
If you have long, straight hair you can get Carrie's beachy waves with Catwalk Curls Rock by Tigi ($13.99). Coat wet hair (immediately after the towl comes off your head) with an ample amount of this wonder product and then blowdry with your head upside down with a diffuser. Hold sections of your hair in the diffuser center for 5 second intervals and rotate around your head until completely dry. The Conair diffuser will fit over the end of virtually any round hair dryer. For $6.99 you can't afford not to try this product.
If your hair already has a bit of curl, you won't need as heavy of a product as Curls Rock. Try Pantene Pro V Curl Defining Schrunching Mousse ($4.49). A quarter sized amount on medium to long hair will do ya. You should still use a diffuser for ultimate wave. If you're on the market for a new hair dryer, check out the Chi Pro Hair Dryer ($160) that comes with a diffuser and a straightening attachment.
If you have short hair like Miranda, there is no reason you can't do the wave, too.
Diffusing short hair will make you look like you just got electrocuted. Bumble and Bumble Curl Conscious Curl Cream ($30) and a large and small barrel curling iron are necessary for this style. A lot of people put this miracle cream into natually curly hair and let it air dry for wavy curls. But I put a dobble in my hair after drying and before curling. Instead of buying more than one curling iron and taking up precious bathroom closet space (or floor space if you live in NYC), check out the HAI 3 in 1 professional curling iron ($121). It comes with 3 interchangeable barrels.
Now read closely here because this is the important part: if you want waves, it is counterproductive to wrap your hair around the curling iron from bottom up. All the curl will remain at the bottom and the heat has a hard time reaching the roots of your hair. Intead, starting at the root, with the tip of the curling iron (not where the cord is) pointing to the ground, and wrap sections of your hair evenly around the curling iron in sections. Do some wrapping right and some wrapping left with different sized barrels. You'll have Miranda's sleek and sexy short waves in no time.
