Earlier tonight, President Barack Obama addressed the nation for another State of the Union address. We’ll let the political bloggers give you the recap on his speech so we can focus on what we’re good at–namely, Michelle Obama’s dress! The First Lady wore a forest green Azzedine Alaia dress and matching cardigan and the first thing we thought when we heard who the designer was was Cher Horwitz’s famous Clueless line: “Uh no, you don’t understand, this is an Alaia.” (Watch the classic scene here.)
Of course, this isn’t the first time MObama has shown Alaia love. She wore the designer three times in 2009: first for the NATO dinner in France, then again for the American Ballet Theatre Opening Night Spring Gala in New York and again for the Christmas at the White House special with Oprah. In 2013, Michelle recycled one of her past Alaia dresses for a service at Saint John’s Church in Washington D.C.
Unfamiliar with Alaia? The Tunisian-born designer has been in the game for over 30 years and his famous fans include both Madonna and Lady Gaga. Despite winning the First Lady’s heart, the same can’t be said for fashion icon Anna Wintour. In 2011, Alaia was quoted as saying, “She runs the business very well, but not the fashion part. When I see how she is dressed, I don’t believe in her tastes one second.. Anyway, who will remember Anna Wintour in the history of fashion? No one.” Ouch.
