1. Understand your body’s assets.
Mrs. Obama doesn’t have the perfect supermodel figure, but isn’t that one reason we can relate to her? And one reason she looks so great is because she knows which parts of her body to emphasize and which to camouflage, which is essential to true style. Those sleeveless sheaths and figure-hugging separates show off her toned arms and trim, hour-glass shape. They streamline her body and slenderize hips so she looks sylph-like and ultra feminine.
2. Personalize every outfit.
A cluster of brooches here, a bow pinned there, a patent belt to synch at the waist… they have become Mrs. Obama’s trademark and ensure she doesn’t look like everyone else. These personal touches make each outfit memorable and prompt us to say, “Oh, that’s so Michelle Obama!”
3. Keep it soft and feminine.
Whether she’s celebrating her husband’s election victory or meeting with world leaders, Mrs. Obama balances strong, dynamic silhouettes with soft, feminine separates, such as shawls, cashmere sweaters, flattering wraps and, of course, cardigans. Unlike a structured jacket, with bold shoulders and strong angles, a cardigan emphasizes her femininity and makes Mrs. O approachable.
4. Black and white is always right.
Remember when Mrs. O visited the queen? Even a First Lady can be thrown
into a quandary when it comes to choosing the perfect outfit for
Buckingham Palace. When in doubt however, Michelle Obama wears black and white. Not only is it chic and classic, it always photographs beautifully, too!
5. Chic it up!
We know Mrs. O doesn’t just love costly designer clothes. She buys off-the-rack at H&M, J. Crew, White House Black Market, and Talbots. But she makes her purchases look expensive by replacing trimmings with her own favorite high-end accessories. Last summer, for instance, she fooled fashionistas into thinking her cute H&M dress was an expensive designer piece simply because she substituted the fabric belt with a chic patent leather belt she loved.
