First, a little honesty: it will probably take you more than a week to get through Ellen Galinsky’s Mind in the Making. But, if you’re as passionate about your child’s success and development as we are about ours, it is so worth the investment.
In this book, Galinsky, who has spent her career observing children’s learning processes, identifies seven “essential life skills” that every child needs to know, and how parents can go about making sure they learn them. There are no elaborate tools or fancy equipment needed to implement Galinsky’s skills (such as “Communicating” or “Critical Thinking”). Instead, she encourages interactive play and conversation to teach perhaps the most valuable tool a child can learn: thinking for themselves.
It’s definitely a must-read for all parents–yes, that includes you too, Dad–especially as we embark upon a new school year.
