It’s been years in the making, according to Bloomberg, for retailers trying to expand our denim preferences beyond just the skinny jean. And it seems like finally—finally—we’re starting to open up to other options like designer sweatpants, boyfriend jeans, and even… mom jeans?

That’s right. Ever since we got used to the baggier side of a distressed boyfriend jean, there’s no turning back to wearing a thick slab of denim as tight as a pair of leggings (remember when jeggings were a thing?). While we like what we’re comfortable in, we also like things to look a little flattering. Recently, boyfriend jeans have been revamped and tailored to the point where we’re starting to notice these new silhouettes looking a bit like what our mothers wore back in the ’80s. Luckily, there are a few pairs that look more relaxed-fit than SNL commercial parody, and we’re more likely going to want to wear those than our tired pair of skinny jeans.

But what should we call them? Mom jeans? Relaxed fit? “Girlfriend” jeans? Who knows, but before you start naming names, how about choose a new pair first to get started. Check out our slideshow to see this up-and-coming denim style.
