I'm usually not a huge fan of multitasking designers. If you design beautiful clothes, focus on your collection without feeling the need to develop a perfume, slap your name on a jewelry line, or — the newest designer trend — lend your moniker to a brand of vodka (Roberto Cavalli, I'm shaking my head at you here). But I can make an exception for Diane Von Furstenberg's luxe luggage line. She of iconic wrap dress fame has done a really nice job of translating her eye for texture and pattern into unique, standout luggage pieces I'd be happy to schlep around an airport.
When I'm in the market for new luggage, whatever I ultimately plunk my money down on has to meet some pretty exacting criteria. It has to stand out from the legions of black rolling duffels at baggage claim. It has to mask the scrapes and stains inevitable when airline personnel are treating my bags like shot puts. And it has to be something that will make me look chic and stylish — like the seasoned traveler I'm actually not. Diane's Twigs line hits all three of those points, in a bold coral pattern that will definitely stand out from the pack. The 21-inch carryon ($160) and 25-inch expandable roller ($200) can hide wear and tear (who could take their eyes off the so-bold color?) and the cute and compact beauty case ($96) is perfect for toting through the terminal while pretending to know where I'm going.
If coral's not quite your cup of tea, consider another DVF set. The Working Girl set ($340), in a nail polish-perfect fuchsia hue, comes with the standard carryon and roller, and also with an adorable hat box-inspired round traveling case (so retro!) The more subtle gold-and-chocolate Vintage set ($256) is a classic keeper, recalling a much more pricey luggage-maker who also favors emblazoning his initials all over his travel gear. Three glorious pieces for the price of one designer wallet? Not a bad deal.
