When I talk about how much I love shopping, people often think I have a bit of a problem. Finding a great deal on a pair of shoes I love or jeans that look great on me brings me such joy, I get giddy just thinking about it.

For a long time, I’ve tried to explain why shopping was my happy activity, but there are still people that don’t get it. But now, thanks to Marshalls, there’s irrefutable evidence! According to Consumer Emotion and Behavior Expert Peter Noel Ph.D., our lives are enriched by surprise. In fact, 77% of women feel happy and excited when they shake up their routines. So yes, there are benefits to making a pit stop at your local Marshalls on the way home from work instead of just getting to the kitchen and starting dinner like you always do.

Even better, Noel explains that “surprise begets surprise. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable and let surprise in, we discover more of life’s hidden treasures.” You may start small by stumbling upon a surprising new brand or dress silhouette you love at a Marshalls store and then your openness to new experiences and surprises will continue to grow.

So there you have it–shopping really is beneficial to your mental well-being!
