Whenever I leave a workout class without stretching, something feels off. I definitely need to transition my body back into functioning like a normal human being. Turns out, there are actually a lot of reasons why you should always stretch after a workout.
Lactic acid builds up in your muscles during a workout, which causes muscle soreness and fatigue. According to Fit Day, “When you stretch after a workout, your muscles are warm and you benefit from increased blood circulation.” It’s best to stretch at this time when your blood is flowin’ to avoid any and all soreness and fatigue later on.
Fit Day also points out that stretching helps your muscles recover faster. The more times you stretch after a workout, the less sore you’ll be in the long run. I remember feeling like I couldn’t move after my first few SoulCycle spin classes. Now, I don’t feel as sore the next day because my body is used to the motions and the stretching after each class.
Relax the mind
My favorite part about stretching! It’s a great way to reset your body after going hard during a workout. Just stopping abruptly not only feels wrong, but it doesn’t give your body the time it needs to calm down. If you’re like me, you probably don’t really think during a workout and just go, go, go. Stretching afterwards lets your mind and body reconnect again.
