Over 40 And Pregnant--A New Celebrity Trend?
September 9, 2013
As a mom, there is probably no question I hate more than “Can moms have it all?” People often ask assuming I have some otherworldly insight, but I don’t. I have no idea. All I know is that as a mom, you should do what works best for you, your kids and your lifestyle. I had my daughter at what some would consider a pretty young age–24, in case you’re wondering–and have managed to build a routine that works for us. I always knew I wanted to be a mom, so I decided I didn’t want to wait. That was my choice.
On the flip side, though, I’m digging all the celebrity moms who are making the opposite decision–choosing to have children later than what most would consider the norm. In the last few months (and even days!), many over-40 women have announced they’re expecting. Rachel Zoe, who is 42, is pregnant with her second child as is Halle Berry who is 47. Gwen Stefani, 43, is rumored to be pregnant with her third child and Thandie Newton, 40, just announced she’s also expecting her third child. Maya Rudolph, who is 41, just gave birth to her fourth child. Kate Winslet, Melissa George, Gail Simmons and Soleil Moonfrye, who are all 37, aren’t far behind. Neither is Kim Zolciak, 35, who’s expecting twins.
A few years ago I wrote a story about 60-year-olds having children and one of the comments has always remained in the back of my mind. One reader wrote, “For me, age brought so much to the table in a very positive way. I had my youngest son 17 years ago and was pregnant at the same time as my two oldest daughters. I feel that I am a much better mother, this time around, than I was with my older children. There really IS something to be said for experience!”
So are theses celebs, like the commenter from that old article, onto something? Is motherhood even more enjoyable–dare I say, easier–when you’re in your 40s and 50s because you’ve lived your own life and can parent with all those experiences? I had pretty much written off another child, but the older I get the more I am starting to reconsider. What do you think? Would you have a baby in your forties like these celebrity moms or do you think that’s too old? Weigh in in the comments.
