Before there was Balmain, the runway standout of the decade, all leather, spikes and sharp shoulders, there was Pierre Balmain, a French couturier famous in the ’40s, whose fashion equals were Dior and Balenciaga. Known for opulence in ball gowns and the like, his big focus was on cut and movement. When Christophe Decarnin revived the bankrupt line in 2005, celebs and fashion editors got on board. The only catch? Prices range from around $990 to $14,000–not exactly recession- friendly. Enter 2012. Pierre Balmain (the fashion line) is born: a diffusion of all of the edgy looks without the jaw-dropping prices. You don’t have to have your publicist call their publicist either: it’s sold at Nordstrom.
