Do you remember what you were doing when you were 39 weeks pregnant? Maybe making last minute changes to the nursery or triple checking that you installed the car seat correctly, and I bet the only marathon you were thinking about was the marathon of labor.
But not Amber Miller. With her doctor’s approval, the veteran marathon runner ran AND finished the Chicago Marathon last weekend. OK, technically, she ran half the 26.2 mile course and walked the rest, but still…the woman finished a marathon for crying out loud. And when she crossed the finish line, it’s not like she went home and took the rest of the day off. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl less than eight hours later!!!
I don’t know about you, but I get exhausted just thinking about her story. Call me lazy, but when I was pregnant my exercise routine consisted of parking at the farthest corner of the lot at work and walking the extra steps. On a good day I’d sneak in a walk during my lunch break, and if I was especially feeling motivated I’d take a walk around the neighborhood after dinner.
Sorry, but no marathons for me…pregnant or not. But Miller’s story does make me want to get off my big butt and start working out. Shoot, if a pregnant woman can run a marathon, what’s my excuse? I can at least take baby steps.
What about you? What did you do for exercise while you were pregnant? What do you think of marathon mom? Inspirational or insane?
