At spring runway shows, the grown-up China Doll look was practically stalking us from tent to tent. We saw a whole lot of flawless skin, touched with pastel blush and clean black eyeliner, which actually looked pretty and fresh, and really quite perfect for just about when you'll be ready to swap your down coat for your trench.
The danger here, of course, is to go overboard with foundation in search of that porcelain skin and end up looking like an actual doll. To avoid this, it's important to choose something with enough coverage to even out your skin but will also let it shine through the makeup. We've heard great things about Guerlain Meteorites Powder ($51), which uses soft colors with Mother of Pearl and gold to deliver a bright, flawless complexion.
For the signature rosy cheeks, stick to pinks and peaches like NARS blush in Amour or Orgasm ($25), rather than the brown or taupey fall colors.
Finally, liquid eyeliner tops off the look, and it doesn't have to be the nightmare everyone imagines. We recommend using a liner with a firm applicator (more like a marker, less like a brush) that will still get you the thin cat-eye line, but with fewer mess ups. MAC's Liquid Eye Liner ($16.50) is a good choice, as is the multi-tasking Liquif-Eye ($17.50) from Too-Faced Cosmetics. It's not actually a liner but a liquid that allows you to turn any eyeshadow you have into one. And how great is that?
