In early 2014, it seemed that Selena Gomez had disappeared from Hollywood. Rumors were flying left and right that the singer was suffering from substance abuse. These speculations started a year earlier when Selena canceled her 2013 tour in Asia and Australia. Then things really hit the fan when she later sought treatment at the Dawn at the Meadows rehab facility. Now, the singer just opened up to Billboard about what was really going on during that time in her life. The real reason why she took a break from the industry is shocking to say the least.
Selena checked into rehab willingly, because she was diagnosed with lupus and had to undergo chemotherapy treatment. She shares with the magazine, “That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke,”, she gets more candid as she says, “I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”
But now, Selena is back and better than ever. Her anticipated album Revival is coming out soon. And, she wants everyone to know that for the record, this album has absolutely nothing to do with Justin Bieber. She’s doing things for herself because she deserves to, “This is my time. I’ve deserved this. I earned it. This is all me,” she shares.
So, what’s the real inspiration for her highest-charting music yet?
“I’m so f–king nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me. I’ve been working since I was 7. I’ve been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17. It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story,” Selena says. But from the hate and becoming a tabloid story she never deserved to be, she credits the awful rumors with, “The hate motivated me.”
You just never know what someone is going through. But moving forward, we’re so excited to see Gomez stronger than ever, and we’re rooting for her the whole way through!
