With iPods reaching critical mass (iPods are more popular than beer!), natural next partnership would be with another icon of American culture, Nike. Get ready to bring your workout to the next level. Since you already have your iPod dutifully strapped to your arm before your morning run it will be easy to ‘tune your run.’ In addition to hearing your music, you will hear real time feedback on your workout.
How does it work? Well, as you might expect, there are some start up costs. First, you have to purchase the Nike +iPod Sport Kit (available July 13)
which provides you with a sensor that uses a “sensitive accelerometer†to measure your activity and transmits the information to your iPod, giving you audio and visual feedback during your workout. Of course, then you need specially designed pair of Nike+ Shoes that have a built-in pocket under the insole to properly accommodate the sensor.
After your run, dock your iPod, just as you usually do, and it will upload all of your workout information to nikeplus.com where you can track your progress and create workouts. You are now a high-tech runner! If you are an avid runner, it looks like this gizmo can really help maximize your performance.
The Nike+iPod Sport Kit will be available in July for $29 at finishline.com but you can reserve yours now. Although none of the shoes are available yet, it appears the pricing will range between $90-$130.
