Two Philadelphia staple department stores will close this spring: Lord and Taylor in the old Wanamaker building, and Strawbridge’s in Center City. Both owned by Federated Department Stores, they will close their doors on June 1. The good news: Lord and Taylor will reopen as a Macy’s in two months’ time. The great news: the store will have a huge clearance sale in April. Oh, joy! I am so there. However, in another fit of bipolar disorder, I am also sad. Lord and Taylor was one of the grand old shops in its heyday. But, then again, so was Wanamaker’s, wasn’t it? Wanamaker’s is credited with being one of and possibly the first department store. So well known is it that almost anyone but anyone knows what Wanamaker’s was even if they’ve never been in one. Ah, well, you know what they say about change…Find Lord and Taylor, and Strawbridge’s at lordandtaylor.com and strawbridges.com.
