Every now and again, you’re bound to come across older women who make you wonder if they ran face-first into Bozo The Clown. The rouge is dotted heavily on the apples of their cheeks, their lipstick is applied in a tidy bow and their overdone half-moon eyebrows make them look constantly surprised. I used to think their eyesight had to be going, but recent advice on eye makeup from beauty expert Darrell Redleaf, has convinced me otherwise. “Most women will always end up applying makeup in the style that was in fashion when they came of age,” he says in an ivillage.com interview. “…don’t put a dark color where [there is] a natural shadow…the crease creates a natural shadow. So the dark color goes on the lid itself, with a little gentle blending upward, and a taupe or some other lighter color goes on the brow bone. We’re usually only using two colors, not three.” I learned something new today. That’s the good news. The bad news is I now realize my eye makeup is out of date, too. Dang.
