SCAD (the Savannah College of Art and Design) releases unto the world some immensely talented artists. But we all know that being an artist in today's capitalist society is not the easiest endeavor. Because of this, SCAD has created a website that merges the creative powers of its students with good, old-fashioned, American buying power.
Thanks to their creative thinking, you can now shop some innovative, original pieces by SCAD's students, alumni, and faculty. And fear not, this isn't only a site for people who attend art openings and discuss Kandinsky. (It's also great for those who go to them just for the wine, cheese, and mini-quiches!) You can find jewelry, home wares, and even artwork with some serious investment potential. After all, a lot of the work is by yet-to-be-discovered talent. Personally, I think some of the jewelry designs are pure genius. So, feed the artists while injecting some brag-worthy and impressively educated steals into your life.
Here is a selection of my favorite SCAD baubles:
1. Diamond Stepping Stone Earrings by Amy Pilkington, $700-$1050: Amy Pilkington counts Christy Turlington, Eve Salivel, Mandy Moore and Anita Roddick among her high profile clients. Her roughly hewn jewels, which have been featured in numerous magazines, always use small, delicate diamonds as the perfect accent to create a tough-yet-feminine look that's the jewelry equivilant of a stylish leather jacket over a lacy cocktail dress. Also on the site is her Tibetan seal collection, which effortlessly mixes the modern and the antique into wearable bling.
2. Turtle Ring by Annie Alto ($1575): This peridot and 18K gold ring is bold enough to bring any fashionista out of her shell Or at least we hope so, because people are bound to ask her where in the world she got this original piece.
3. Vintage Birdie Ring by Allison Ross ($140): Girly and adorable, this ring takes me back to my days of toting around Barbies and Hello Kitty–except it's adult enough to look great with a casual jeans outfit or feminine, flirty frock.
5. Gold Karat Bracelet by Megan Clark ($286): I am currently drooling over this piece. The funky bracelet offers a fabulous way to inject some color and whimsy into any ensemble. And as a girl whose wardrobe is predominantly black (it's easier than losing five pounds), this bracelet would provide a bit of Harajuku-esque fashion sensibility to any one of my LBDs.
