Shoulders Play Peek-a-Boo

In the midst of winter, dressing to impress can be tricky. I have this conundrum almost weekly when deciding what to wear to dinners and events, or even just meeting friends. Strapless tops or dresses can be a little too much (for several reasons really–too cold, too pale, etc), but jeans with turtleneck sweaters, even cashmere beauties, have got me feeling the frump after too many in a row.

Well, thank goodness some red-carpet faves suggested a happy medium: the off-the-shoulder dress. A la ripped sweatshirts from the 80s, Nicole and Rihanna rocked more classy looks recently, albeit with the same strategically bared skin. Good thing this is one style that doesn't just look good on celeb bods–and its relatively easy to find in a range of prices. In fact, the hardest part might be choosing which ones you like best. Here's a few I liked, and they're all a little varied from the classic off-the shoulder.

L to R: Bebe One Shoulder Studded Petal Dress ($189), Just Cavalli 'New York' Print Silk One Shoulder Dress ($645), Michael Kors Off-the-shoulder tiered dress ($997).

For what to wear underneath, if you're not a fan of the classic strapless underwire, I'd recommend trying a convertible bra that has removable straps. The good this is that you'll have at least one to work with, and you can move both around to find what's comfortable. Check out Le Mystère No. 9 'Lolita' Convertible Strapless Bra ($76) — it has pretty straps (so leave them on if you want), and it's built for a bigger chests, which normally have a harder time wearing strapless. Two-for-one…can't beat that!
