The toothpick-thin stiletto heels of the Sex and the City era are officially out this season. A heavier, chunkier, clunkier heel has taken its place – both on the runways and, in about a month or two, your closet. Come September, lug sole boots will be in high demand. We’re calling it now.

We’re not exactly psychic – we just paid attention at Fashion Week back in February, where designers like Vivienne Tam, Prada, Stella McCartney, Reed Krakoff, and Mui Mui showed the Doc Marten-style clunky-sole boots and brogues with their fall/winter collections.

Not sure what they are? Google image “lug soles” and you’ll recognize the trend immediately. Typically found on utility footwear like work boots or hiking shoes, the lug sole is a thick, rubber sole with deep indentations to provide traction. Maybe the designers were trying to prevent catwalk slippage, or more likely, the shoe is a part of a greater 90s trend that is happening everywhere. What is more 90s than Doc Marten combat boots? (Just ask Daria).
