Take A Cue From These Cali Girls: 5 L.A. Trends We Want To Steal Now

This week I hit the streets of Los Angeles in search of that effortlessly chic style Angelenos are famous for, so I could bring a little taste of it back to my new home in NYC.

While L.A. was not short of fashion,  it was short of walkers! Once an Angeleno myself, I’ve since ditched my car and strapped on my walking shoes for the streets and avenues of New York. So I guess it was easy to forget how 4 blocks in Los Angeles can seem like a 4-wheel trek instead.

Nevertheless, I roamed the streets of Brentwood, Melrose Avenue, Robertson Boulevard,  the 3rd Street Promenade, and West Hollywood, looking for fashionistas. I’ve shared my favorite looks below.

Here are the 5 Los Angeles trends I’m taking back with me to New York:

1. The Printed, Tri-Season Maxi

Since parting with the year-round “70-degree-and-sunny” weather in L.A., I’ve demoted my maxi dresses to the back of my closet until further summer notice. But pairing a printed maxi dress with a structured jacket and boots is a nice option for all seasons. Try this Emilia Ikat Zigzag Maxi Dress ($144) with this J.Crew Jean Jacket ($168).

If the jean jacket and maxi dress is too “hippy-dippy” (as my father calls it) for you, a nice alternative is a structured military jacket or blazer.

2. Mixing Hard and Soft

This is flirty enough for L.A. but edgy enough for N.Y.  A pleated skirt or dress with a leather jacket is a simple and comfortable option with a sexy result.

We found her exact BCBG Maxazaria Lilyan Strapless Maxi Dress ($398), and add this Rick Owens Leather Jacket ($2,550) to finish the outfit. This is the perfect combo for an easy-to-pull-off look.

3. Mint Skinnies

Here’s another thing I quickly left on the west coast: color! Black and neutrals seem to be the New Yorker’s uniform, but adding a pop of color is a must! Whether it be colored jeans or a bright coat, color can still be luxe and stylish.

Try these Rag and Bone Jeans ($187), and pair them with the classic L.A. movie star staple:  the Wayferer Ray-Bans ($150).

4. Utility Jackets + Maxi Skirts

Stripes, maxi skirts, and utility jackets, oh my! I have all three items in my own closet, but I wouldn’t have thought to wear them together.

Steal a page out of this Angeleno’s style journal and try something new with this Madewell Offmap Utility Jacket ($148) and this comfy LNA Column Skirt ($99). Finish the look with these Cutler and Gross Oversize Sunglasses ($475). So cute.

5. Round Sunglasses

New Yorkers are some of the best at rocking structured clothing, but can they look laid-back at the same time?  The key is in the accessories. Wear this Jasper Jacket with Leather Sleeves ($737) with these Prism Copenhagen Sunglasses ($421). Add in that California beachy hair and you’re ready to go.
