Ruby Aldridge in the new charity scarf, and models from Thakoon’s Fall 2011 runway show
The hottest trend in fashion lately? Giving back. One of the many designers heading charitable ventures is Thakoon Panichgul, who has created a limited edition scarf (pictured left on model Ruby Aldridge) whose entire proceeds will benefit famine victims in Somalia. The blue and red checkered scarf mimics the pattern seen in much of Thakoon’s Fall 2011 runway collection, which was inspired by the Masai people of East Africa. The $250 scarf is now available exclusively at Thakoon.com.
But Thakoon isn’t the only one using fashion for philanthropy…
Stuart Weitzman recently partnered with young starlets Scarlett Johansson, Hayden Panettiere, Olivia Palermo and Michelle Trachtenberg in a capsule collection whose proceeds will benefit ovarian cancer research. The collection ranges from $425-$498 and will be available in September on StuartWeitzman.com.
On the retail front, Nordstrom just opened their first “Treasure & Bond” store, where 100 percent of profits from all merchandise will be donated to charity. While only one store exists as of now (in NYC’s SoHo), plans for expansion are underway.
