The 2-Second Trick For Telling If Jeans Will Fit Without Trying Them On

Sometimes you just don’t feel like trying clothes on–or, if you’re at a sample sale, for example, you simply can’t. This means that you have to be able to eyeball or guesstimate whether a particular item will fit just looking at it or holding it up.

This method isn’t actually totally off, though–there are some strange synchresis with the human body that make it work perfectly. Like, for example, your forearm and your foot are the same length–so if you don’t have time to try a pair of shoes on, just hold it up to your arm. And, the circumference of your neck is about the same as the width of your pants waistline. So, if you want to tell whether jeans will fit without actually trying them on, you can put them around your neck! Yes, it really works. Here’s how to do it:

The 2-second trick for telling whether jeans will fit (without trying them on!) works like this: with the jeans buttoned, you take the waistband and wrap it around your neck. If the ends meet, the jeans will fit. If there’s a gap, they are likely too small. Or, if there’s a lot of overlap, they’ll probably too big. This trick is pretty accurate–but it’s not infallible. If, for example, the jeans are really low-rise, it might throw off the trick because this equation account for the waist not the hip measurement.
