Utility Jacket We're into the military style for fall, but we can't deny that this jacket is light. It's more of a statement maker than a layer to keep you warm. For those days in September and October when you don't really need a jacket, but still want to wear one to get into the fall spirit--this is your go-to. Lily Aldridge for Velvet Jacket - Army ($148)

Leather Jacket A true leather jacket does keep you warm and is a great layering piece over heavy sweaters. But it's not the jacket you should wear when it's 55 or below. It just won't cut it. Opt for a leather jacket on days when you do need a jacket but it's not crazy cold. New Look Leather Biker Jacket ($124.57)

Peacoat Now we're getting into late October/November weather. A peacoat is a step above a winter coat and should be worn before you break out your heavy winter gear. Try this on those fall days when you think it's too cold. Vila Wool Mix Double Breasted Jacket ($53.39)

Long Peacoat A longer peacoat should be worn under almost the same circumstances as a regular peacoat, just on slightly colder days. Wear this when it's 50 or below and you need an extra layer over your legs. BB Dakota Melinda Coat ($128)

Oversized Jacket Hopefully you won't need a jacket this heavy for fall, but it does happen. Especially since the first day of winter isn't until December 21st! Expect this to be in your jacket rotation come December. ELEVENPARIS 'Taylor' Oversized Jacket ($295)
