Products That Are Bad For Your Hair
Wearing your hair in a ponytail: We're not saying to never wear a ponytail again, but tight elastic bands around your hair cause breakage, which lead to "angel hairs" (aka frizz). Wearing a tight ponytail can also lead to a permanent indention in your hair. Solution: Wearing a lower, more loosely styled ponytail like in the image to the left is a great option, and looks cute too! Also opt for hair bands that are made of thicker fabric. They'll get hair off your shoulders without pulling your hair super tight. These Emi-Jay Hair Ties ($6.50) are all the rage right now and come in trendy colors and designs. [via Cupcakes & Cashmere]
Carols Daughter Conditioner
Protein-based conditioner: Too much protein will eventually make your hair lose its elasticity and cause it to break easier when brushing and using heat styling tools. Solution: Choose a formula that has an equal balance of protein and moisture. We like Carol's Daughter Tui Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner ($13).
Kiehls Sunflower Shampoo
Cheap shampoo: A lot of shampoo brands found in drugstores formulated with chemicals (because they're cheaper!) that will strip your hair's color and natural oils. They are also chock full of sulfates which produce lather, but are very harsh for sensitive skin and will also strip away your hair's color and moisture. Solution: If you're shopping at a drugstore, make sure to look for products that are low in sulfates (specifically sodium lauryl sulfate and SLS) and ones that contain moisturizing benefits. A lot of brands nowadays products natural and sulfate-free formulas. Try this Kiehl's Sunflower Color Preserving Shampoo ($18). It's one of our favorites.
Skipping heat protection: high heat from blow dryers and styling tools can really cause long term damage to your hair. Solution: It's important to use a heat protectant spray to help moisture and prevent breakage, as it will gently coat and protect your strands while styling. TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray ($4.75) is one of our favorites, and super affordable!
Silicone Free Products
Silicone-based products: Products with silicone will definitely make your hair gorgeous and shiny looking, but that's only temporary. It actually prevents proper nutrients from hair masks and conditioners to penetrate into the hair shaft. Solution: Take time to read the labels before purchasing hair products and make sure they don't contain silicone. L'Oreal has a full EverSleek range that's made without silicone but still gets the job done.
Brushing from the roots down: It can cause snags and breakage, especially while wet. Wet hair is more fragile and more prone to breaking. Solution: Check out our tips on how to brush your hair the right way, as well as brush recommendations here.
