The Best New Eyeshadow Palette For Beginners? Jane Iredale's In The Blink Of A Smoky Eye Kit
October 23, 2015
We all love a great eyeshadow palette, but I don’t think I’m alone in saying gifting me one without clear instructions on how to use all of the beautiful shades is like giving a 7-year-old the keys to your car. That’s one of the reasons I’m obsessed with Jane Iredale’s new In the Blink of a Smoky Eye Smoky Eye Kit, which contains eight highly-pigmented, totally wearable shades that look great on all eye colors–as well as a thoughtful booklet with step-by-step directions on how to achieve five gorgeous smoky eye looks.
The kit was designed for women who want flawless holiday makeup, but don’t have hours to spent in front of a mirror–so yeah, all of us. The looks you can create with the eyeshadow colors are timeless, no matter what the season, and perfect for anyone whose knowledge of smoky eyes starts and ends with heavy black eyeliner. The shades include lighter tones like bone, pure gold and dawn, as well as kicky (but subtle) colors like rose gold, iris, and forest. On the darker end of the spectrum, there’s a delicious double espresso and dramatic ebony.
The pull-out booklet, complete with images of each of the five eye looks, is my favorite part. Sizzle Smoke and Natural Smoke are gold-based looks that can be worn during the day, while Emerald Smoke, Deep Smoke, and Fiery Smoke are ideal for nighttime and formal occasions.
As a beauty lover with two left hands, I’ll admit that it took me two or three tries to nail my natural smoky eye look, mainly because I’m rather heavy-handed with a brush and had to learn to pace myself and go slow–you can always add on shadow, but it’s more difficult to remove it with a Q-tip after the damage has been done. I’ll say this though: the fact that not a single speck of powder landed on my cheeks while applying the shades made me a very happy woman. The instructions are simple to follow and it took around five minutes to complete each look. I always wear a shadow primer beneath my makeup, just in case, and these shades lasted from day until night.
All Jane Iredale makeup is certified cruelty-free, wheat-free, and vegan. Each In the Blink of a Smoky Eye Smoky Eye Kit costs $50 and will make for the perfect holiday gift for your beauty-obsessed friend or relative (but really, for yourself).
