The latest beauty trend to be sweeping the nation is dyed armpit hair. However, it’s more than just a beauty trend. Most of the women who are dyeing their underarms, are trying to break the standards of beauty and prove that hair is just hair, no matter if you’re a man or a woman.
Women who decide not to shave their armpits come under attack and receive negative comments and/or looks from other people. Roxie Hunt, a Seattle hairstylist, started the Free Your Pits Movement along with Rain Sissel. They wrote on their website, “Our goal is to use this demonstration of personal choice and expression to help broaden and challenge the standard of “beauty” in a society that already places way too many harmful standards on women.”
Miley Cyrus is totally on board with the movement. Miley dyed her armpits and bikini area pink.
Destiny Moreno, a 17-year-old who is pro-armpit hair, told the New York Times, “Nobody questions when a guy wearing a tank top does a selfie that shows his armpit hair. But if I happen to show my armpit hair in a selfie, it’s like, ‘Whoa, feminist witch asking for attention.’”
Here are some other women who are taking the “normal” standards of beauty and shoving them out the window:
