The One Beauty Trend That Will Be Out For 2018
December 12, 2017
If you’re like a lot of beauty lovers, you’ve acquired an impressive collection of matte lipsticks and matte liquid lip colors over the past few years. You were with Kylie Jenner throughout it all — tracking her sold-out matte nude lip shades and heading over the Colour Pop to fuel up on their version of the matte — shades that look perfectly blotted without any help from a tissue. And you probably knew, somewhere in the back of your mind, that all trends eventually fizzle out and die — but not these super hydrating and modern mattes, right?
It looks like the time has come for us to bid farewell to matte as the number one hot lip trend — it’s one beauty trend that’s on its way out in 2018. That doesn’t mean you have to run and chuck our every matte lipstick you own (which is relief because some of those babies cost a pretty penny). There’s still a place for mattes at the lipstick table, but we spoke with Ashlee Glazer, Laura Geller Global Artistic Director, about the newest lip trends and how to modernize your matte so that it looks fresh and current.
1. Creamy Formulas And Glosses Will Reign Supreme
Not only were spring 2018 runways filled with models sporting lighter, glossier lips, but new creamy lipsticks and glosses are being offered by some of our favorite brands. From Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Gloss Bomb, which is the most gorgeous shade of shimmery nude, to Kim Kardashian’s KKW Beauty Holiday Beam Lipgloss, already we can see that two celebs who routinely kill it while wearing matte shades are open to something different.
“Matte lipstick is a timeless texture that will always have a place in our hearts,” Glazer says. “If you splurged on the matte trend and don’t know what to do — it’s not totally over, but glossy and creamy lips are making a comeback as well.”
Some of Glazer’s favorite new glosses and creamy formulas include Laura Geller Color Luster Hi Def Top Coats, which she calls “shimmery and sheer and the perfect layering finish for a glossy lip” and Smith & Cult, which has “beautiful creamy pigment in their lip glosses, and almost all are shimmer-free.”
2. Don’t Toss Your Matte Lipstick — Convert It
There is a way to keep your matte lipstick and give it a slight tweak that will make it more modern and in line with the newer lip trends. And it’s a cheap fix, to boot, with a product you probably already have in your medicine cabinet.
“Mix your matte lipsticks with a balm like Vaseline to create a creamy texture with the same beautiful color you love,” Glazer says.
3. Transform Your Favorite Matte Into A Multitasking Product
Most mattes are made with a thicker formula than creamy lipsticks and lip gloss. And while this thickness can have a tendency to make lips feel dry when worn as a lipstick, it can work wonders as a lip liner.
“Use the matte lipsticks as a liner and [here’s a] longwear layering tip: apply with a brush as you would use a lip liner to shape and define the lip, and then apply your new favorite gloss on top,” Glazer says.
