The One Question You Should Always Ask Before Buying Something
July 12, 2016
We all own at least one: it’s that piece that you absolutely loved when you saw it in the store and had to have – except it actually ended up hanging in your closet, unworn, with the tags still attached. If this sounds all too familiar, you’re definitely not alone – but there’s also a super easy way to prevent it from ever happening again by asking yourself one simple question.
“Can I wear this with at least three other pieces I already own?” If you’re not asking yourself this before buying something, chances are good that you own a lot more pieces than you actually wear. Next time you think you’ve found the perfect top, make sure you can pinpoint at least three ways to style it using things you already have in your closet. If you can’t, let it go – it’s probably not worth it. The same goes for items like shoes and bags – you may love a pair of shoes, but if they only go with one specific skirt or pair of pants in your closet, it’s likely that you won’t get tons of wear out of them.
Thinking about multiple ways to wear a piece before you swipe your credit card will save you from an overstuffed closet and an understuffed wallet down the road. Not to mention that the “three ways” rule is also a great way to create a wardrobe where everything goes together, making it so much easier to get dressed in the morning. You’re welcome.
